10/06/2009 Third Annual PD Therapeutics Conference
MJFF and NYAS hosted the Third Annual PD Therapeutics Conference, the only major scientific symposium exclusively focused on speeding therapeutic development for Parkinson’s disease.
The researchers have identified two drug-like molecules that, when given systematically in a pre-clinical model of Parkinson’s disease, reduce PD symptoms by acting on a specific glutamate receptor in the brain called the metabotropic glutamate receptor, or mGluR4. Edmonton-born actor and philanthropist Michael J. Fox was in Toronto on Thursday to announce his Parkinson's research foundation is now a tax-exempt charity in Canada.
The funding, aimed at to successfully translating neurotrophic factor advances from pre-clinical and early-phase clinical work into a practical, patient-relevant treatment for Parkinson’s disease, will be awarded under a new directed LEAPS (Linked Efforts to Accelerate Parkinson’s Solutions) initiative.

Funded investigations aim to push forward novel neuroprotective and improved symptomatic therapies as well as new strategies for addressing complications of treatment.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research announced approximately $2.1 million in total funding to 10 research teams working to validate therapeutic targets for Parkinson’s disease.
07/08/2009 Michael J. Fox Foundation to Fund Continuing Open-label Study of CERE-120 Safety and Efficacy
The Michael J. Fox Foundation has signed on to fund the long-term, open-label analysis of data from Ceregene, Inc.’s Phase 2 trial of CERE-120, a gene therapy approach to deliver trophic factor neurturin to the brains of Parkinson’s patients. The funding will allow Ceregene to collect and analyze data from trial enrollees for another 48 months.

Bartus, PhD, executive vice president and chief scientific officer of Ceregene, Inc., about the news that Ceregene’s Phase 2 clinical trial of CERE-120 (the company’s gene therapy approach to deliver trophic factor neurturin to the brains of Parkinson’s patients) failed to show a difference between treatment and placebo.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research has awarded $2.5 million total for seven Parkinson’s drug development projects. The funding was awarded under a special, one-time academic funding track of the Foundation’s industry-focused Therapeutics Development Initiative.
