The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) announces the launch of a funding program, Cognitive Deficits and Mood Disorders in Parkinson’s Disease, made possible by generous leadership funding from Merck Serono (EMD Serono in North America). Under this program, researchers are invited to submit investigator-initiated grant applications designed to promote preclinical and clinical research to understand the biological basis and develop treatments for cognitive deficits and behavioral disturbances (such as depression, anxiety, impulse control, psychosis) associated with PD.

Cognitive and psychiatric symptoms often co-exist and some conditions, such as apathy, may be closely related to both aspects of mental functioning. While all patients with PD experience progressive motor dysfunction, not all patients experience cognitive and behavioral disturbances. The presence of such heterogeneity within the illness may provide an opportunity to better understand these conditions. The MJFF encourages innovative approaches to improve the understanding and development of treatments for these cognitive and psychiatric symptoms.

We employ an expedited, abbreviated granting mechanism to accelerate discoveries and ultimately translate findings to Parkinson's patients more quickly.
