Objective/Rationale:
MJFF recognizes the need for predictive pre-clinical models for PD research. The currently available pre-clinical models do not recapitulate all of the features of PD pathology and symptomology, thus limiting translation of pre-clinical findings to the clinic. Moreover, the intellectual property on the currently available pre-clinical models is protected through university technology transfer offices.
Project Description:
MJFF has taken a proactive approach in funding generation of pre-clinical models, including transgenic as well as knockout versions of many important genes implicated in PD. Phase 1 characterization data of these newly generated models including gene expression levels, protein levels, integration sites, copy number, etc, will be shared with the PD research community on PD Online Research website. These MJFF-generated models will not be restricted by intellectual property and will be available at rodent repositories at cost without any use restrictions, to both academic and industry investigators.
Relevance to Diagnosis/Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease:
The end result may be that the pre-clinical models that are being generated by MJFF funding are scientifically improved models compared to the existing pre-clinical models.
Anticipated Outcome:
A progressive, predictive model of PD.
