In the May 2020 edition of our Third Thursdays Webinar, featured panelists discuss the immediate questions they had after receiving a Parkinson’s diagnosis including: how is this diagnosis going to affect my functioning, what treatments would be most helpful and what does the future hold?
Soania Mathur, MD, co-chair of The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s Patient Council moderates a conversation with two people living with PD, ESPN founder, Bill Rasmussen and Fox Insight participant, Eric Aquino, and Amy Amara, MD, PhD, movement disorder specialist and associate professor of Neurology at UAB. Highlights include:
- Parkinson’s progression and how it is unique to each person,
- Building a care team and the importance of a movement disorder specialist,
- Medications and tips for living well including exercise, eating a healthy diet and participating in research.
The event also included a survey asking attendees, “what was one of your first questions after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s?” More than 800 people weighed in with 31 percent wondering “what will happen to me?” followed by 15 percent questioning “what caused my Parkinson’s” and 14 percent asking, “how is it treated?”
