Aik Choon Tan, PhD is an assistant professor at the department of medicine, University of Colorado, Denver. He received his bachelor of English in bioprocess/chemical engineering from University of Technology Malaysia. He earned his PhD in computer science/bioinformatics from University of Glasgow, UK and completed his postdoctoral training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Dr. Tan’s research interest is in translational bioinformatics, in which he has vast experience in algorithms and computational tools development for: 1) identifying simplified gene signatures using machine learning and statistical methods, and 2) integrating multiple layered data sets using pathway-driven analyses to delineate deregulated pathways in diseases. He has developed a novel method, k-Top Scoring Pairs classifier, for disease classification based on simple and accurate decision rules learned from microarray expression data. This method will be used in the proposal for the discovery of circulating miRNAs as biomarkers for the prognostic and diagnostic of PD.
