Elisa A. Waxman, PhD, is a team leader of neurobiology at Medical Diagnostic Laboratories, LLC. Dr. Waxman began her career running Phase II/III clinical trials as a clinical research associate. Aiming to contribute to novel therapeutics, she pursued her PhD in pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania, where her work specialized in excitotoxicity and glutamate receptor pharmacology. She joined the laboratory of Benoit Giasson, PhD, where her work focused on Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease pathology, biochemistry associated with protein misfolding, and familial mutations that are causative of disease. Dr. Waxman was a recipient of a postdoctoral fellowship in age-related neurodegenerative disease, under the management of Virginia M.Y. Lee, PhD, University of Pennsylvania. In 2011, she joined Medical Diagnostic Laboratories, as the initiating member of the Neurobiology Division. Her current work focuses on oxidative stress factors and identification and validation of novel therapeutic targets to combat the progressive neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease.
