Dr. Epaminondas Doxakis received his PhD in neurobiology from St. Andrews University in Scotland where he studied the mechanisms underlying neurotrophic factor (molecules that support the growth and survival of neurons) dependence and responsiveness in the ganglia (groups of neurons) of the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord). He conducted post-doctoral training at Edinburgh University on the HIPK2 signaling pathway, during which he identified mechanisms of programmed cell death in different types of neurons. Between 2002 and 2005, Dr. Doxakis studied part-time at the Edinburgh Management School, from which he received an MBA degree in biotech. In 2004, he moved to Cardiff University for additional post-doctoral work on the role of transcription factors in neuron survival. He then joined the Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens in 2005 as an independent investigator. Dr. Doxakis has participated in the teaching curricula of the aforementioned institutes and at Greek universities. His current research is aimed at studying the roles of microRNAs, short RNA molecules (messengers that carry genetic information to DNA), and RNA-binding proteins in neurodegenerative processes.
