Associate Professor of Neurology at University of Verona

Location: Verona Italy

Gianluigi Zanusso, MD, PhD, is an associate professor of neurology at the University of Verona. He received his doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Verona in 2000 and trained in medicine and surgery, with a specialization in neurology, at the same institution. Dr. Zanusso has extensive experience in studying the clinical, neuropathologic and biochemical aspects of prion disorders and other neurodegenerative conditions. The main focus of his research has been the involvement of olfactory system in neurodegeneration. He developed a sensitive and highly accurate test for diagnosing Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease using samples collected via nasal swabbing. His laboratory is currently adapting this approach to the detection of pathological misfolded proteins in other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, multiple system atrophy and idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder. Dr. Zanusso is a member of the Neuroprion Association and is an academic editor of the journal PLoS ONE.
