Guy A. Rouleau, MD, PhD, received a degree in medicine from the University of Ottawa and a degree in genetics from Harvard University. In 2007, he was made an officer of the Ordre National du Québec, and, more recently, he was awarded the 2012 Prix du Québec – Prix Wilder Penfield and the Henry Friesen Prize from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is currently the director of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital.
As a researcher, over the last 20 years, Dr. Rouleau has focused on identifying genes causing several neurological and psychiatric diseases, including autism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hereditary neuropathies, epilepsy and schizophrenia, as well as on providing a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of these diseases. Among his main achievements are the identification of over 20 disease-causing genes and his pionnering work about the contribution of de novo mutations to psychiatric disorders.
