Helen Matheny is a nationally recognized public policy expert in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. She was director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Outreach and Registry Program at the Blanchette Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute at West Virginia University (WVU). In 2011, she was appointed to serve as one of 11 nonfederal members of the National Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services to develop the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease. In 2015, she was appointed chairperson of the Council’s Clinical Care Subcommittee. Dr. Matheny has participated on several national steering committees, including the “National Research Summit on Care, Services, and Supports for Persons with Dementia and Their Caregivers.” She has testified before United States Senates’ Special Committee on Aging and has presented internationally on best practices for care of individuals living with dementia. She also serves as director of Collaborative Relations and Initiatives for the WVU Health Sciences Center.
