Kaylena Ehgoetz Martens is an Assistant Professor in Kinesiology and Health Sciences and a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Gait and Neurodegeneration at the University of Waterloo. Martens' research program focuses on reducing the impact of neurodegeneration by preserving mobility through understanding the cognitive-emotional mechanisms underpinning gait disorders such as freezing of gait (FOG) and innovating novel assessments and analytical techniques for health technologies. She has a track record of over 30 published papers on freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease (PD) focused on (i) accumulating evidence for the causal role of anxiety, (ii) innovating novel assessments to characterize FOG heterogeneity, (iii) using wearable sensors and 2D video to detect and predict FOG, (iv) mapping the neural substrates associated with FOG. As the co-lead of the FOG Assessment and Outcomes International Working Group which met earlier this year, she developed the ClinRO and PRO featured in this project.
