Professor Leigh Hale is the dean of the School of Physiotherapy/Centre for Health, Activity and Rehabilitation Research at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She graduated as a physiotherapist from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and went on to attain her MSc (in neurorehabilitation) and PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). Dr. Leigh worked as clinical physiotherapist in a wide range of areas of physiotherapy before pursuing an academic career. Her primary focus is in the area of community-based physiotherapeutic rehabilitation, aging care and self-management support and fall prevention in people with disabilities or lifelong conditions, including neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, dementia and learning disabilities. Using quantitative and qualitative methodologies, her research concentrates on health equity and helping physiotherapists to support individuals live optimally healthy and engaging lives.
