Dr. Marten Munneke was trained as a physical therapist, human movement scientist and epidemiologist. In 2004, he received his PhD degree at Leiden University Medical Center, the Netherlands, on a large multicenter, randomized controlled trial that aimed to evaluate long-term intensive exercise therapy in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RAPIT study). In 2002, he was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Department of Neurology and the Department of Rehabilitation & Allied Health Care of Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center. He was also appointed as Scientific Director of the Parkinson Centre Nijmegen (ParC). His main research interests are evidence based practice of allied health care in Parkinson’s disease, quality and innovation of multidisciplinary care in chronic neurological diseases and physical activity and exercise in neurodegenerative disease. Dr. Munneke served as project leader for the development of national evidence-based guidelines for physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy in Parkinson’s disease. Together with Dr. Bastiaan R. Bloem, he is currently chairing the development of a national multidisciplinary guideline for patients with Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Munneke is also project leader of the large ParkinsonNet trial, which aims to evaluate an organizational strategy to improve the efficiency and quality of physiotherapy care for patients with Parkinson’s disease. In the framework of this trial, regional networks of physiotherapists specialized in Parkinson’s disease (‘ParkinsonNet’ networks) have been implemented within 16 regions in the Netherlands. In 2006, this ParkinsonNet concept received an award for the best health care innovation in the Netherlands.
