Dr. Mathias Toft is a professor of neurology at the University of Oslo and senior consultant at the Department of Neurology at Oslo University Hospital. In 2001, Dr. Toft completed medical school in Tübingen, Germany, and, after completing initial clinical training, he obtained a PhD in neuroscience in 2007. From 2003-2005, he spent two years as a visiting scientist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. During this period, Dr. Toft contributed to genetic research on Parkinson´s disease (PD), including early studies of mutations in the LRRK2 gene. After returning to Norway, Dr. Toft now combines laboratory and clinical research within the field of movement disorders. He is a member of international consortia studying the genetics of movement disorders, including the Comprehensive Unbiased Risk factor Assessment for Genetics and Environment in Parkinson's Disease and the Genetic Epidemiology of Parkinson's Disease. His current research projects focus on mechanisms of PD and the effects of advanced treatments such as deep brain stimulation.
