Kokaia raduated from Tbilisi State University in 1973 and received a PhD Degree in Neuroscience in 1983 at Beritashvili Institute of Physiology, Tbilisi, Georgia, exploring mechanisms of seizures and epileptogenesis. In 1986-1987 Kokaia was awarded a Scholarship from Swedish Institute, as a visiting researcher at Lund University, working together with Professors Anders Björklund and Olle Lindvall on neural cell transplantation in epilepsy. He completed his Habilitation Degree in Neuroscience at Beritashvili Institute of Physiology in 1991, and the same year went back to Sweden, Lund University, as a visiting researcher, exploring the role of neurotrophic factors in epileptogenesis together with Prof Olle Lindvall. In 1996 he went to UCL, UK, as a research fellow in Professor Dimitri Kulmann’s group, and the same year he was appointed assistant professor at Lund University. He received his Docent Degree at Lund University in 1998. In 2004 Kokaia was appointed associate professorship, and in 2008 full professor at Lund University.
