Professor Raimo K. Tuominen, 56, made his M.D. in 1983, defended his PhD thesis in 1986, and became professor of pharmacology and toxicology in 1999 at the University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland. His research focuses on neuropharmacology, especially that of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, intracellular signal transduction pathways and neurotrophic factors related to pre-clinical models of Parkinson’s disease. Prof. Tuominen was the coordinator of Pro-KinaseResearch Consortium 2004-2009. This project "Protein kinases – Novel drug targets of post genomic era" was an Integrated Project of the European Union 6th Framework Program. The research was carried out by 20 academic institutions and 5 SME partners in 12 countries. Prof. Tuominen has been PI or Co-PI in several research projects where effects of the neurotrophic factors CDNF and MANF has been studied in pre-clinical model of Parkinson’s disease.
