Remi Villenave, PhD, has a background in airway physiology. In his research, he aims to model airway tissue using 3D cell culture systems. During his first post-doctoral fellowship, Villenave established a new model of respiratory syncytial virus infection that captured the hallmarks of the disease in children. This research was summarized in six publications and won prizes at national and international conferences. During his second post-doctoral position, he developed Organs-on-Chips and created a model of airway epithelium inside a microscopic Airway-on-Chip device. In collaboration with industry partners, Villenave used the Airway-on-Chip device to model asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and test anti-inflammatory drugs in development.
