Dr. Fisher received his PhD from Iowa State University in 1983, and completed his post-doctoral research at the University of Texas Health Science Center before becoming a faculty member in pharmacology at the University of Iowa in 1987. He was promoted to associate professor in 1993 and professor in 2004 and has a secondary appointment in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Fisher is a member of numerous programs and centers at the University of Iowa and has served on many NIH study sections. His research has focused on the molecular/cell biology and signaling/physiological roles of RGS6, a member of the RGS family of G protein regulators. He has demonstrated that RGS6 plays critically important roles in modulating G protein signaling in the heart, cerebellum, hippocampus and brain reward regions and that its loss leads to disease. His current research aims to understand the neuroprotective role that RGS6 plays in age-onset and neurotoxin-induced Parkinson’s disease.
