Tim Karl graduated from the Leipniz University of Hannover (Germany) in 2003 with a PhD in zoology (behavioral neuroscience). Until 2008, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research working on pre-clinical models for neuropeptide Y and schizophrenia. In 2008, Tim Karl established his own behavioral neuroscience group at NeuRA. His research focuses on the neuro-behavioural consequences of gene-environment interactions in pre-clinical models for brain disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease). Tim also aims to enhance the validity of pre-clinical models and the well-being of models in medical research by providing more stimulating housing conditions.

Tim Karl has been awarded major research grants and fellowships from the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia, the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression in the USA and the German Research Foundation.
