Veronika E. Neubrand, PhD, received her PhD in cell biology from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, in 2005. She continued her cell biological research by studying the molecular mechanisms of axonal and dendritic growth in neurons at the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute (CRUK LRI) in London, UK. In 2009 Dr. Neubrand joined the Institute of Parasitology and Biomedicine López-Neyra – CSIC in Granada, Spain, with her main focus on the role of microglia (the resident immune cells of the brain) during neuroinflammation, an important hallmark of many neurodegenerative diseases, among them Parkinson´s disease. Dr. Neubrand is specifically interested in the intra-cellular events during the transition of microglia from a neurotoxic to a neuroprotective phenotype.
