Professor William (Bill) Griffiths studied for his BSc and PhD at University College Cardiff, UK. Throughout the 1990s, he was a researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm working in the field of biomedical mass spectrometry. Dr. Griffiths left the Karolinska Institute for The University of London School of Pharmacy in 2003, and in 2007 he joined Swansea University Medical School, where he holds the chair in mass spectrometry. Dr. Griffiths’ research is focused on the application of mass spectrometry in the study of cholesterol biosynthesis and metabolism, with a particular focus on oxysterols, chemical derivatives of cholesterol. Working with Professor Yuqin Wang, he developed a highly sensitive, enzyme-assisted technology for the analysis of sterols by mass spectrometry. His current interests include the involvement of sterols in neurodegenerative diseases and the identification of unusual sterols and metabolic pathways presenting in rare diseases.
