For Andrew Nguyen and Athena Hoerl, their father’s journey as a Vietnamese refugee has been a lifelong source of inspiration. Leaving everything behind, Hien Nguyen made countless sacrifices to give his children opportunities he never had. His values of resilience, love and tenacity became the foundation of their upbringing and took on even greater meaning when, after years of unexplained symptoms, their father was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2022.
Though challenging, the diagnosis brought clarity to the family, allowing their father to access the treatment and support he needed. “As kids, we always saw our dad as invincible,” said Athena. “When he was finally diagnosed, we were relieved to have answers and moved by his vulnerability.” Determined to honor their father, Andrew and Athena committed themselves to a mission that would reflect his strength and support others facing Parkinson’s.
They both decided to channel their energy into Team Fox, the grassroots community fundraising program of The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF). Inspired by their father’s 20 years of service as a U.S. Army medic, Andrew and Athena were drawn to the discipline and dedication that running demanded. “Our father’s values of service and hard work are deeply ingrained in us,” said Andrew. “Watching him transition from peak fitness to facing the challenges of Parkinson’s was tough, but his military discipline and focus on service have always inspired us.”
Andrew took on the challenge of the London Marathon, viewing each mile as a tribute to his father’s strength. Moved by her brother’s resolve, Athena joined him by training for the Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon. “I never thought I could do it,” said Athena, “but watching Andrew’s determination and seeing how much it meant to my dad made me believe I could.”
As they embraced this journey with Team Fox, their mission grew beyond personal dedication. The demands of training and the goal of fundraising connected them to their community of friends, family and colleagues. “The outpouring of support was powerful and motivating,” said Andrew. “It felt like a ripple effect of hope,” said Athena.
At first, their father was hesitant to share his diagnosis publicly, but as he became involved in their fundraising efforts, he became more open. “Every dollar counts, and keeping people informed and inspired to support MJFF’s mission to find a cure is crucial,” said Athena. “It was incredible to see my dad embracing the support around him.”
Their dedication to Parkinson’s research also aligns with their professional lives in public health and their passion for advancing medicine. “Supporting The Michael J. Fox Foundation allows us to contribute to a brighter future for patients and their families,” said Andrew.
Their journey continues, with Andrew determined to complete all six World Marathon Majors and Athena eyeing her next adventure. “Each race is a step closer to hope,” said Andrew, seeing each finish line as a way to honor their father’s resilience and contribute to the future of Parkinson’s research.
Through their commitment, Andrew and Athena have transformed their father’s diagnosis into a mission of hope and advocacy, using every mile to champion the possibility of a cure for everyone affected by Parkinson’s disease.
