Deep brain stimulation (DBS) and recently FDA-approved focused ultrasound (FUS) are two options to manage Parkinson's symptoms, but not everyone is eligible. Dr. Soania Mathur, co-chair of The Michael J. Fox Foundation's Patient Council, leads a discussion with Patient Council member Richie Rothenberg, Dr. Joohi Jimenez-Shahed, director of the Deep Brain Stimulation Program at Baylor College of Medicine and Dr. Paul Fishman, professor of neurology, pharmacology and neurobiology at University of Maryland School of Medicine. They cover many commonly asked questions about these procedures, including:
- Who's eligible for DBS and FUS and why
- How these procedures target Parkinson's symptoms
- What to expect pre- and post-surgery
- Recent advances to these medical devices
Read a Q&A with Dr. Jimenez-Shahed, who is leading the Deep Brain Stimulation Registry funded by MJFF.
